Eco-Friendly Materials Being Used More in Homes
Many homeowners and builders are now choosing to use environmentally friendly and energy efficient products in their homes.

San Diego, CA - March, 2007 - With Al Gore's documentary, The Inconvenient Truth, and with Earth Day around the corner, more Americans are choosing to "go green". According to a recent McGraw Hill NAHB report, green home building will reach a tipping point in 2007, with more than 50 percent of home builders participating in green building.

Green builders and concerned homeowners across the nation are taking notice of the hidden toxins within their building and home materials. These toxins are not only harmful to the environment, but to a homeowners' health. Environmental Protection Agency studies have shown that indoor pollutant levels can be anywhere from two to five times higher than they are outside.

"The source of these pollutants is often times right under your feet, hiding in your flooring, especially carpet," said Kelley Munoz of West Coast Flooring Center. "Instead of purchasing carpets with high amounts of harmful toxins and VOCs (volatile organic compounds), we encourage homeowners to consider more environmentally friendly flooring options."

According to Munoz, popular products that are environmentally friendly include cork, bamboo and natural tile flooring. Cork flooring, which is made of ground tree bark, is sealed with non-toxic resins, while bamboo flooring, consisting of bamboo shoots that are harvested every four to eight years, is proven to be a more durable and eco-friendly alternative to oak or laminate flooring.
