Floor Your Floor On Your Own!

Floor Your Floor On Your Own!
DIY guide to flooring bamboo!

It is always a good thing to do something for yourself and it gives you that feeling of accomplishment every time you look at what you have done. In this case, floor installation, and not just any floor but bamboo floors, if well installed, can be durable and they can last longer than anything in the house due to their low maintenance needs. If you are a contractor, it would be relatively easy for you to do it for yourself, but for the majority of the population who are not as skilled, this article is designed to show you how to do it for your household; to walk on a floor you have installed with a sense of accomplishment.

Preparation

  • Subfloors

Since bamboo floors are installed on top of other major floorboards, you need to first install a subfloor of your liking, choosing from wood, concrete, or vinyl. The subfloor that you eventually choose will dictate the method of installation, for wood and vinyl, it is easier to nail the bamboo while for concrete subfloors you will have to use cement or other ways of bonding the two.

  • Acclimatization

The first thing you need to do is procure bamboo floor pieces form a reputable dealer. You need to do your research to ensure that you get the best deal for quality bamboo floors. After delivery, you should out the pieces in the respective rooms where you intend to install the floors. This process is called acclimatization; where the bamboo floor adjusts into the temperature of the room to contract or expand depending on the temperature. What this helps with is to prevent the process of warping that occurs to wood and bamboo due to humidity or differences in temperature.

Work on the flooring

The first thing when after installing the bamboo floor you should do is to clean the room and make sure that there are no dust particles. These particles can cause unevenness and cause the bonding of the bamboo to weaken at some point. After cleaning, it is important to lay out the bamboo on the floor and make sure that they fit in the room. Leave it for a while for the same process of acclimatization, and then depending on the subfloor you can start the nailing, cementing or gluing.

Finishing

After you have installed the floors, you should sweep out the dusty and broken particles so that you can apply the final additions on the floor. This is the interesting part you can apply different colors of vanish depending on the color scheme of the room, to show your personality or just try out something new. The wood vanish is applied on to the floor in the direction of the grains to avoid a smudgy look. Another tip is to put vanish that goes well or further exposes the age rings on the bamboo or the grains on the bamboo that gives your house a natural look which is the main reason why people go for the bamboo floor.

After installation no-no’s

After installation, there are some things you should avoid doing on the bamboo floor, for longevity you should not drag furniture on the floors, avoid heavy furniture that can fracture the floor or create unnecessary dents. Avoid high-heeled shoes that can tear into the floors. Keep them clean and dry as much as possible.
