Kitchen Counters – 5 Surfaces For Modern Times

Kitchen Counters - 5 Surfaces For Modern Times

The kitchen is most probably the most important room in the house; it is the center of the most important activities that take place in the house such as cooking. As such, it is vital to have it in the best condition it ever can be. Of great importance is the kitchen counter; this is the surface where ingredients are prepared and you probably have to “visit” it daily since this is somewhat like the “food center” of your house.

Kitchen counters, especially in modern kitchens are built using various materials, both for durability and aesthetic value. Among the numerous surfaces, the following are most suitable for current times:

Granite kitchen countertop flooring.
  1. Granite surfaces

Granite surfaces are the marble floors of the kitchen, they are known for their elegance and beauty. They come in different colors and can be colored to suit the color scheme of the kitchen. They are durable and scratch resistant. Maintenance comprises wiping the surface and once in a while, polishing. The counters are not susceptible to stains, hence their suitability to the kitchen.

  1. Concrete surfaces

As the name suggests, they are made of concrete. They are cast from the floor up and they can be fitted with a sink. They are very affordable and they can last for long as long as the concrete is mixed in right proportions and given ample time to dry. They are very suitable due to their low maintenance, their hardy nature but nothing can be said about their aesthetic value.

Example of a stainless steel countertop.
  1. Stainless steel counters

These counters are built of steel, or steel is mounted on a concrete block. They are long lasting and able to handle any kind of damage from surface scratches, hot cooking pans and stains. However, bleach and any other acidic compound can damage them. For aesthetic value, stainless steel countertops are placed on top of marble or concrete blocks of different colors with kitchen drawers that have contrasting cabinet drawers.

These really bring the kitchen to life and this is the reason, such counters are preferred in kitchen shows and other advertisement commercial. They are cheap and easy to install and this gives them an edge over the others.  The middle class mostly prefer these kinds of counters as granite kitchen counters are more expensive.

  1. Ceramic tile counters

Ceramic tiles have endless functions in construction. Apart from lining walls or making beautiful floor, they can be used to make kitchen counters. Ceramic tiles are used to line concrete blocks to enhance the beauty of the house. They come in different colors and are easy to find. The main advantage they have is that they can be changed at any time possibly to suit a change in the kitchen. They are cheap, durable and easy to maintain.

  1. Formica kitchen counters

These are most probably the most affordable kitchen counter tops available. They can be placed on top of either a concrete box or a wooden surface in the kitchen area. They are not known for durability but can add beauty to the kitchen as they come in different colors. They are brittle and easy to break, so they should be handled with care.
