Understanding The Effects Of Extreme Climate Factors On Your Flooring

There is a constant battle between your home’s flooring and the weather elements, but you are the only one who can determine the fate of this conflict by taking the proper maintenance steps. Even the highest quality flooring in San Diego is susceptible to damage, especially in climates with extreme weather conditions.

The first one that springs to mine is evidently flooding, but scorching heat and strong sunlight are also factors that will damage your floor’s aspect in time. In addition, always remember that high levels of moisture in the atmosphere can be just as damaging to the tiles as a full blown flood. So what exactly can you do to prevent potential harm?

When you live in a constantly flooded region…

While several years ago few mainland zones were actually flooding on a regular basis, nowadays more and more people have to deal with this problem. Most of us believe the floods to be one of the consequences of the dreaded global warming, but irrespective of the cause, protecting your home is the number one priority. You should not be lead to believe that the floor is safe as long as the floodwater does not enter your house. In fact, things get even worse if the floodwater penetrates underneath the floor, because the excessive pressure created will erode the home’s foundation, causing cracks to develop.

Your first course of action would be to determine the most probable sources of flooding in your region and find out their frequency, the course of the water in the eventually of a flood and the risks it poses to your property. Secondly, take a look at your home and check out all the entry points that floodwater can use, including cracks in the masonry, doors, slabs and other vulnerabilities.

Concrete and tile flooring constitute the optimal anti-flood solutions, but you can also take it up a notch by elevating the floor’s level over the estimated height of the water in case of a flood. In addition, make sure that you leave sufficient space in between the floor and the subfloor, in order for the water to slide unobstructed and without causing excessive pressure. This is a rather complex process and it is advisable to consult with a flooring specialist if you want to be on the safe side.

When you live in a region with dry and hot weather…

Natural stone flooring as well as tiles are the suggested materials for flooring in this type of climate, not only due to their resilience to heat but also because of the lower needs for maintenance. However, if you have vinyl flooring, then you will need to make sure it is not in direct sunlight because it has the tendency of fading easily.

At the same time, if you want to keep the wooden, cork or bamboo flooring safe, then make sure the humidity levels are kept at 40%-60%, and respectively 35%-65%. This can be achieved with a humidifier when you live in a dryer region. Alternatively, people who reside in areas with humid climates can control the moisture levels with a dehumidifier.
