Why Won’t The Tiles In My Bathroom Stay Mounted On The Wall?

Why Won't The Tiles In My Bathroom Stay Mounted On The Wall?
Bathroom tiles

When you begin an extensive remodeling project in your home, you primary expectation is that you will not be forced to do any more touch-up work for a long time once it is finished. Starting from the San Diego flooring and ending with the tiles in your bathroom, quality renovations involve long term durability and exquisite looking fixtures. However, unpleasant occurrences like bathroom tiles falling off in less than two weeks after installed are not exactly infrequent.

When this happens, most homeowners remain puzzled. What did they do wrong? What did the contractors do wrong? Was it because of the craftsmanship of the tiles? Could it be due to an improper installation? Let’s find out what the main factors that cause the tiles to slide off the walls are.

Was the plaster properly primed before the application?

Believe it or not, an inadequate plaster is the primary reason for tiles falling off your bathroom walls. Therefore, if you or the contractor that installed the tiles did not take the time to prime it, you can be certain that your shower wall’s façade will be short lived. The explanation to why the primer is so important here resides in its waterproofing capabilities, protecting both the plaster and your walls against humidity. In its absence or when the layer is not applied properly all across the surface of the shower walls, water will eventually infiltrate underneath the tiles, loosening the adhesives and causing them to fall off.

Did you clean every tile before the installation?

In general, the tiles are cut to size in order to match the surface of the wall and this operation generates a lot of chalk dust. There are many contractors who skip the simple step of wiping the tiles clean of dust and debris, which is a serious mistake. The explanation in this case is also very simple: when the tiles are covered in chalk dust, the effectiveness of the adhesive utilized in the installation is substantially reduced.

Did you utilize the correct grout at the right time?

Grouting is an essential part of the tile installation process, but you cannot do it too early. The optimal time for grouting is typically 24 hours, because you will want to allow the adhesive sufficient time for drying and setting in. With respect to the type of grout you want on your bathroom walls, make sure it is waterproof. The grout also has to be applied correctly across all the seams and pressed firmly in order to ensure the water cannot infiltrate underneath the tiles.

For aesthetic purposes, you can then remove the excess grout. A final tip at this point is that you can enhance the water repellant ability of this substance by spraying it with a sealant. Quality sealants also guarantee that you will not experience problems with mold and mildew formations in your bathroom, because these organisms thrive in small niches that develop between the tiles and the all.

Did you let the tiles set?

In case neither of the aforementioned mistakes have been made but your bathroom tiles are still falling off, then the last possible explanation is that you utilized the shower too soon. Remember, whether you are installing San Diego flooring or mounting wall tiles, you always need to permit the adhesives and sealants to work their magic.
